4×4

Do you speak 4×4?

I have recently bought my first 4×4 and have to say that I am feeling overwhelmed with all the terms and technology. Please explain some of the common terms in layman’s terms. – Sunette Truter

Our writer and digital content creator, Anton Willemse Jnr, has undergone a number of 4×4 training courses and continuously learns “on the job”. He explains some of the most common terms:

Marhaban in Morocco!

Yala, yala! Let’s go, let’s go! Our valiant group of five couples make our way to the 4x4s in the thin dust of a setting sun over the north-western corner of the African continent, Morocco. The road twisted and wound through the High Atlas Mountains, past crumbling kasbahs and goat herders and the most magnificent vistas… the Sahara Desert was calling!

Lose your heart in the red dunes

Since the completion of his beloved overlanding beast, #HiluxDevilBuild, Stuart Queripel has dreamt of undertaking a proper self-drive (and self-planned) overlanding adventure. The mere mention of wild camping, with the sound of roaring lions lulling you to sleep, was enough to convince his better half, Oksana, to venture out to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park during their annual leave.

A true Kanniedood

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is known to be an absolute beast – one with impressive off-road prowess and a decent amount of power on tap, thanks to its proven 4.0 V6 engine. While many regard it as nothing more than a weekend warrior or a toy, FLIP and MARIANNE SNYDERS see their FJ as the tool with which they can escape from the mundane and experience the spectacular.

Difficult, but worth it!

Located within the boundaries of the Marakele National Park near Thabazimbi, one should not be fooled by the tarred nature of the Lenong Pass. This is quite a challenging pass on a narrow road that clings precariously to the side of the mountain with extreme unprotected drop-offs and, according to TRYGVE ROBERTS of Mountain Passes South Africa, it is certainly not for anyone suffering from acrophobia (fear of heights).

Like a Bat out of hell

Meat Loaf’s 1977 hit song could just as well have been written about the new Ford Ranger Raptor. ANTON WILLEMSE SNR insists that this is probably the craziest and most fun vehicle he has ever driven, and that it might be a while before we see anything similar on the roads.

“Well, I can see myself tearing up the road, faster than any other boy has ever gone.”
– Meat Loaf, Bat out of Hell

Born for this!

They are often called the underdogs at trail line-up, but from the tales of our followers the Suzuki Jimny is truly #BornForThis and can keep up with any of the hardebaarde, often reaching spots the big guns can’t! In the run-up to what promises the must-be-seen-at event on the 2023 automotive calendar – the largest Suzuki Jimny gathering in the southern hemisphere (and possibly the world!) during the upcoming Heritage Day weekend – we took a look back at some of our favourite Jimnys making it into the pages of Adventure Afrika.

Go West!

Avid overlander and 4×4 enthusiast, PATRICK CRUYWAGEN, compares the Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona, to other overland and 4×4 shows around the world. What he saw and experienced there was a bit of a culture shock… quite unlike anything he had ever come across in other countries.

Take 5

Following the introduction of the brand-new Grand Cherokee seven-seater in August last year, Jeep have added a five-seater to the mix. According to LIANA REINERS it’s everything a premium SUV should be, and then some!
