Who needs sunshine when you have a BMW X3? The local launch of BMW’s latest X3 turned into an unexpected adventure as we battled torrential rain and roads that looked more suited to a rowboat than a car. But hey, what better way for the X3 to prove its mettle?
The day started with a fascinating tour of BMW’s Rosslyn plant – South Africa’s pride and a key hub for global X3 production. Then came the real test: a drive to Sun City through weather so grim that it reminded me of a doomsday movie. Thankfully, the X3 handled it all with confidence, proving that bad weather and dodgy roads are no match for Bavarian engineering.
A BMW X3 for every taste
There are three models in the new X3 line-up, so whether you like your drives efficient, eco-friendly, or electrifyingly fast, there’s an X3 for you. The range consists of the ever-dependable 20d xDrive, the green-leaning 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and the thrilling M50 xDrive for those who like their commutes with a side of adrenaline.
BMW X3 20d xDrive: Efficient performer

The 20d xDrive may be the entry point, but “basic” is not in its vocabulary. It runs on a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 145kW, delivering power smoothly while sipping fuel like it’s at a wine tasting.
Standard kit includes 19-inch alloy wheels and heated, electrically adjustable sport seats wrapped in sustainable Econeer material – saving the planet, one stylish seat at a time. Three-zone climate control ensures no squabbles over temperature, while acoustic glazing keeps the cabin tranquil.

The BMW Curved Display with Operating System 9 offers slick connectivity, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto keeping your tunes and texts flowing. The premium sound system ensures your favourite road trip playlists sound top-notch. Plus, you get all the bells and whistles: ambient lighting with welcome/goodbye animations, Comfort Access, an automatic tailgate, adaptive cruise control, a reversing camera, and a panoramic sunroof that lets in just the right amount of sunshine (or, in our case, a view of the ominous looking clouds above).
BMW X3 30e xDrive: PHEV with a purpose

For the eco-conscious driver who still enjoys a bit of punch, the 30e xDrive delivers a combined 220kW from its 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motor. With an electric-only range of up to 90km, it handles daily commutes without a single emission (or guilt trip).
On top of the 20d’s generous spec, you get adaptive LED headlights with blue accents that add a bit of flair. The Veganza upholstery levels up the luxury, while BMW IconicSounds Electric brings a futuristic vibe to your drive. The Harman Kardon sound system takes care of the beats, and BMW Live Cockpit Professional keeps you on course. It’s all wrapped up in tech features like remote software updates and intelligent personal assistance that knows your coffee order … well, not quite … but you get the picture.
Charging is sorted with 11kW AC capability and Connected Home Charging.
BMW X3 M50 xDrive: The powerhouse

If you like your mornings shaken, not stirred, the M50 xDrive is for you. With a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine delivering 293kW and a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 4.6 seconds, it’s basically a rocket in disguise and one of those cars that will make you as giddy as a kid in a candy store.
It boasts 20-inch M alloy wheels, adaptive M suspension, and red-caliper M brakes that look ready for the track. The iconic kidney grille now glows (yes, glows!) with contour lighting, while quad exhausts shout its sporty credentials.

Inside, Merino leather upholstery, a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, and M-specific digital displays ensure luxury isn’t sacrificed for speed. Gesture control, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and a 360-degree camera round off the package. It’s the ideal companion for those who want power and poise in equal measure.
Rosslyn Plant: Proudly South African

BMW’s Rosslyn plant isn’t just a manufacturing facility – it’s a badge of honour with a distinctly local flavour. As BMW’s first plant outside Germany, it plays a pivotal role in global X3 production.
Some might say the toughness of these X3s comes from more than just Bavarian engineering … perhaps a dash of local grit from Rosslyn’s hardworking team? After all, the plant’s focus on sustainability, with circular production processes, means local customers benefit from shorter lead times and a greener conscience. Plus, every X3 that rolls off the line here carries a bit of Mzansi pride; ready to tackle everything from city commutes to torrential downpours and gnarly backroads, just like the ones we braved on the launch drive.

A BMW X3 Rugged model?
Now for some exciting news: at the launch there were some loud whispers about a Rugged edition of the X3 tailored for South African adventurers. At this point it’s still very much pie-in-the-sky and nothing is official yet, but picture this: all-terrain tyres, underbody protection tough enough for rocky trails, and roof racks ready for all your camping gear (because let’s face it, we all know someone who packs like they’re moving house for a weekend trip). Throw in specialised driving modes designed for the trickiest terrain, and you’ve got an X3 built to handle anything from Kruger’s dirt tracks to the dunes of the West Coast.
If it materialises, the Rugged will be a great companion for those who believe the best roads are the ones less travelled. It would probably come with a hefty price tag though …
The verdict
From efficient diesel performance and green-minded hybrid tech to heart-pounding M power, BMW’s latest X3 line-up truly offers something for every driver. With local production adding a sense of pride and the potential for a Rugged edition ready for any outdoor escapade, the X3 is clearly geared for every journey – rain, shine, or adventure beyond the beaten path.
