JAC Motors has unleashed a beast worthy of its name – the T9 Hunter Limited Edition – and it’s every bit as bold as the endurance record that inspired it. Based on the range-topping T9 Super Lux, the Hunter takes everything that’s already impressive about the standard model and turns it up a notch.
Under the bonnet, the familiar 2.0-litre intercooled turbocharged diesel engine has been given a shot of adrenaline, now pushing out 144kW and 487Nm – that’s more than 15% up on the regular T9 models. Power is sent through a slick-shifting eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, ensuring seamless progress whether you’re tackling city streets or heading for the open road.
To match the performance boost, JAC has given the Hunter a touch of rugged sophistication. Locally crafted Artav accessories – including a nudge bar, style bar and tow bar – add muscle and practicality, while a tonneau cover, branded headrests and heavy-duty carpets round out the cabin comforts. It’s not all show either; these touches are aimed squarely at bakkie owners who spend as much time outdoors as they do behind the wheel.

Initially released as a limited run of just 24 individually numbered units, the T9 Hunter sold out quite quickly. With that kind of response, it was inevitable that JAC Motors would make the Hunter a permanent fixture in the line-up. The model will soon be available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations and across all eight T9 colours – from the subtle Star Grey to the bold Yellow for those who like to stand out in the bush or the mall parking lot.
The Hunter’s introduction also coincides with a torque increase across the broader T9 range. Since September 2025, all Lux and Super Lux derivatives have gained an extra helping of grunt – up from 410Nm to 444Nm – improving towing and overtaking without bumping up the price tag. That’s great news for those who haul heavy caravans or camping trailers to far-flung destinations.

Fuel economy remains a strong talking point for JAC’s diesel engines. In a recent Gerotek test, the T9 managed 1 226km on just 76 litres of diesel, translating to an impressive 6.2 litres/100km at a steady 115km/h. The slightly smaller T8 even went a touch further at 1 246km, proving that efficiency and adventure can indeed go hand in hand.
Inside, the T9 range delivers a level of luxury that would’ve been unthinkable in a bakkie not too long ago. The cabin is roomy and comfortable, trimmed in materials that feel upmarket yet durable enough to handle a weekend’s worth of camping dust or muddy boots. The dashboard design blends modern technology with intuitive functionality, while the suite of active and passive safety systems ensures peace of mind on long road trips or challenging terrain.
Then there’s the practicality – a braked towing capacity of 3 500kg means the T9 is ready for overlanding, boating or hauling the family’s holiday trailer with ease. Whether parked outside a hardware store or perched on the edge of a gravel track in the Cederberg, the Hunter feels equally at home.
