New model: GAC M8 Master

Bringing electrified luxury to the MPV world

We first saw the GAC M8 Master at the Festival of Motoring earlier this year, and it caused more neck strain than the free coffee queue. With its bold proportions and unapologetically futuristic styling, this is very much a case of more being more. Now that the South African order books have officially opened, the M8 Master arrives not just as a new model, but as the country’s first plug-in hybrid electric MPV – and it is an impressive statement of intent from GAC Motor.

Electrified power with real-world range

Stretching 5 212mm from nose to tail, the M8 Master is impossible to miss. The sculpted bodywork, oversized grille and dramatic LED signatures make it look like a high-end concept car that somehow escaped its display stand.

Behind the styling sits a serious hybrid system. A 2.0-litre turbocharged engine works in tandem with an electric motor to produce a combined 274kW, channelled through an 8-speed automatic transmission. It moves with surprising authority for its size, reaching 100km/h in 8.8 seconds while still delivering excellent efficiency.

Hybrid MPVs are often associated with modest performance and cautious driving, but the M8 Master seems keen to prove otherwise. It offers up to 106km of electric driving and a combined range of more than 1 000km, giving families genuine flexibility for long trips. Fuel consumption of 8.8 litres/100km isn’t bad for a vehicle of this size and reinforces its blend of comfort and modern efficiency.

A first-class lounge on wheels

While its exterior design may draw the crowds, the cabin is where the M8 Master truly sets out to impress. It feels more like a first-class airline suite than an MPV, with beautifully sculpted surfaces, plush materials and an overwhelming sense of space.

Dual power sliding doors and an inductive electric tailgate offer effortless access, while laminated soundproof glass creates a calm, cocoon-like atmosphere.

The second-row seats are showstoppers. These large first-class chairs feature heating, ventilation and a 10-point massage system, along with multi-way adjustment to fine-tune comfort for every occupant. The tri-zone climate control includes a clever windless air-conditioning setup that diffuses cool air evenly and quietly – a thoughtful touch for passengers seeking serenity on long journeys.

Minimalist luxury and refined craftsmanship

GAC’s approach to design leans towards purposeful elegance rather than flamboyance. Semi-aniline leather, beautifully stitched panels, textured switches and ambient lighting create a cabin that feels crafted rather than assembled. Olympus Brown and Black & Red interior combinations give buyers two distinct moods, while the Crystal White and Elegant Black exterior colours keep the look clean, bold and sophisticated.

Despite its luxury positioning, the model is not weighed down by complicated options lists. GAC equips the M8 Master generously from the start, ensuring owners receive the full premium experience without the need to tick boxes.

Techn that enhances the journey

Up front, the cockpit blends clarity with a minimalist layout. A 10.1-inch infotainment screen works alongside a 12.3-inch digital cluster, giving drivers simple, clean displays without visual clutter. Connectivity is comprehensive, with wireless charging and multiple USB-C ports across all three rows so that everyone stays powered on the move.

Audio is handled by an eight-speaker YAMAHA system supported by ADiGO virtual arena acoustics. The result is a richer, more immersive soundscape than one typically finds in a people mover, reinforcing its positioning as a luxury lounge on wheels.

Safety that wraps around the occupants

GAC’s commitment to safety is evident in the M8 Master’s extensive protection suite. A 360-degree airbag matrix incorporates curtain airbags that run the full length of the cabin as well as rear windscreen airbags – an unusual but impressive addition. Seven airbags in total contribute to the comprehensive safety net.

Driver-assistance technologies include adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic braking. Parking and low-speed manoeuvres benefit from intelligent systems designed to ease the pressure of guiding a 5-metre MPV into tight spaces. The inclusion of L2+ semi-autonomous capabilities further positions the model at the forefront of its class.

Luxury mobility for modern families

The arrival of the GAC M8 Master introduces a fresh and sophisticated alternative in the premium MPV space. Its design is bold, its technology plentiful and its comfort levels exceptional. More importantly, it shows that electrified mobility can be large, luxurious and genuinely practical without compromising range or versatility. For families who want something special – something that turns everyday transport into an indulgent experience – the M8 Master makes an irresistible case.

The GAC M8 Master is priced at R1 499 900 and comes standard with a 5-year/150 000km warranty, an 8-year/150 000km EV battery warranty, a 5-year/100 000km maintenance plan, and 5 years of roadside assistance.
