Launch report: BYD Sealion 5

A plug-in hybrid with value on its side

The new-car market has been buzzing about this one for months, and now the BYD Sealion 5 has officially splashed down in South Africa. BYD says the Super Plug-in Hybrid SUV marks the brand’s next big step in making new-energy tech accessible to more local buyers – and after seeing it in the metal at last week’s launch, it’s clear the company is very serious about becoming a mainstream player.

Available in two trims, the Sealion 5 Comfort and the more feature-rich Dynamic, pricing comes in at R499 900 and R569 900 respectively. And yes, that includes VAT. No optional hybrid packs, no mysterious “dealer recovery fees”, no sudden fainting in the showroom. For a plug-in hybrid SUV with strong performance and generous standard kit, the price tag alone will get a lot of attention.

Under the bonnet sits BYD’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and the brand’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system. Together, the powertrain delivers a healthy 156kW system output, fed through an E-CVT gearbox to the front wheels. The electric-only driving range is claimed at 52km under WLTP conditions – ideal for the average daily commute, and enough to dramatically cut fuel use if you keep the battery topped up. The lithium-ion battery capacity is listed at 12.96kWh, and the Sealion supports both AC charging and smart charging management.

On the road, the idea is simple: spend most of your city driving time in EV mode and let the petrol engine step in only when needed. It’s a very accessible introduction to electric mobility, especially for families who aren’t ready to commit to a fully electric lifestyle but also want to reduce running costs and future-proof their driving.

The Sealion 5’s dimensions place it firmly in the heart of the midsize SUV segment. It measures 4 738mm long, 1 860mm wide and 1 710mm high, with a wheelbase of 2 712mm and ground clearance of 150mm. Boot space is rated at 463 litres, expanding to 1 410 litres with the second row folded – plenty for camping gear, dogs, teenagers or the panic-buying load we all pretend we never do.

Inside, BYD has leaned heavily into tech and comfort. The 12.8-inch infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the interface forms part of BYD’s DiLink ecosystem, which brings an extra layer of integration and voice-control capability. Wireless charging, keyless entry, keyless start, rear USB ports, LED lighting throughout the cabin and a sunroof (with electric sunshade) are standard.

Both models share the same safety specification, which is surprisingly generous at this price point. Highlights include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, hill descent control and a full 360-degree camera system. It also boasts a full suite of airbags, including side airbags and curtain airbags front and rear.

Move to the Dynamic trim and you add heated and ventilated seats, a 6-way power driver’s seat, a 4-way power passenger seat, silver roof rails and additional interior lighting touches, among other upgrades.

One feature that will particularly resonate with South Africans is V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality, allowing the Sealion 5 to power external devices. Whether it’s a fridge on a weekend away or a few essentials during a bout of loadshedding, that’s a level of practicality you don’t normally find in this price bracket.

Taken as a whole, the Sealion 5 feels like a well-timed addition to South Africa’s hybrid landscape. Families looking for lower running costs, generous safety tech and strong value without venturing into premium price territory will find plenty to like here. The fact that it arrives with BYD’s fast-building reputation for new-energy innovation only strengthens its case.

Whether it’s enough to shake up the crowded midsize SUV segment remains to be seen, but the Sealion 5 certainly launches with intent – and with a specification sheet that punches well above its price tag.
