A smarter, more efficient SUV offering
The Suzuki Across has officially joined the local line-up, marking a noticeable shift in direction for Suzuki Auto South Africa. Known for its straightforward, value-driven vehicles, Suzuki is now stepping further into the realm of refinement, technology and efficiency.
The Across is positioned as the brand’s most advanced SUV yet, targeting buyers who want something practical and family-friendly, but with a more modern edge.
A confident new look
There’s no mistaking the Across on the road. Its broad stance, sculpted body lines and clean design give it a sense of presence that feels a step up from what we’ve come to expect from the brand.
Up front, slim LED headlamps linked by a chrome strip create a sharp, contemporary face, while the lower bumper and protective elements hint at a slightly more adventurous side. Around the sides, black cladding adds a touch of durability, while the rear is defined by a full-width LED light signature that stands out after dark.
It’s a design that manages to feel both urban and ready for a weekend escape – which, if we’re honest, is exactly what most buyers in this segment are after.
A cabin that keeps things simple
Inside, the Across sticks to a clean, uncluttered layout. Everything is logically placed and easy to use, which makes a big difference in everyday driving.

There’s plenty of practical thinking here too. Multiple cup and bottle holders, a generous centre console, wireless charging and a flexible 60:40 split rear bench all add to the usability. The boot is large enough for family duties or a properly packed weekend away – and we all know those “quick trips” have a habit of turning into full-blown packing exercises.
Two derivatives, one clear step up
The range consists of two main derivatives – GL and GLX – with a clear progression in features and comfort.
Even the GL comes well equipped, with a digital instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control and a reverse camera. Safety is comprehensive, with six airbags and the expected stability and braking systems.
Step up to the GLX and things get more interesting. You get synthetic leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, a head-up display, 360° camera and a panoramic sunroof. There’s also a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist – the kind of features that make long trips a lot less tiring.
Mild-hybrid efficiency takes centre stage
Powering the Across is Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine paired with a mild-hybrid system. Outputs are 76kW at 6 000r/min and 137Nm at 4 400r/min, which tells you straight away that this SUV isn’t about outright performance.
Instead, the focus is firmly on efficiency and smoothness. The mild-hybrid system assists the engine under load and recovers energy during deceleration, helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions while keeping the drive feeling responsive.
Claimed average fuel consumption is 5.3 litres/100km – a figure that makes a lot of sense in today’s fuel climate. The GL is available with either a manual or automatic transmission, while the GLX is offered exclusively with the latter.
A different kind of Suzuki
The Across represents an interesting evolution for Suzuki. It doesn’t try to outmuscle rivals or position itself as a hardcore off-roader. Instead, it leans into what many buyers actually need – comfort, efficiency, modern tech and everyday usability.
For families looking for a well-rounded SUV that won’t punish them at the fuel pumps, the Across could well find its niche.
