Formerly known as the Sperrgebiet (German for “Prohibited Area”), Tsau ǁKhaeb National Park is perhaps the most enigmatic sanctuary in Namibia. For over a century, this vast stretch of the southern Namib Desert was a strictly guarded diamond-mining zone, closed to the public since 1908. This forced isolation inadvertently created one of the world’s most pristine wilderness areas, safeguarding the Succulent Karoo ecosystem-a global biodiversity hotspot with the highest diversity of succulent flora on Earth.
Spanning 26,000 km2 from the Orange River to north of Lüderitz, the park’s name translates from the local Nama language to “Soft Sand.” The landscape is a hauntingly beautiful collection of massive dunes, rocky inselbergs, and the iconic Bogenfels-a 55-metre-high limestone arch that towers over the crashing Atlantic surf. Because mining still occurs in restricted pockets and the environment is incredibly fragile, most of the park remains inaccessible to independent travellers. Access is primarily granted via specialized guided concessions, allowing adventurers to explore the “ghost towns” of the diamond rush, such as Pomona and Elizabeth Bay, where mummified ruins are slowly being reclaimed by the desert sand.
For the overlander, Tsau ǁKhaeb represents the ultimate “off-the-map” frontier. While you can visit the famous ghost town of Kolmanskop as a day trip from Lüderitz, deeper ventures into the park require pre-arranged permits and an authorized guide. It is a place of silence, shipwreck legends, and desert-adapted wildlife like the brown hyena and gemsbok, offering a raw glimpse into a world that was “forbidden” for a hundred years.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I drive through the park on my own?
Generally, no. Most of the park is restricted. You can drive the main B4 road to Lüderitz, but entering the desert tracks requires a permit and, in most cases, an authorized concessionaire guide.
2. Where do I get a permit for Kolmanskop?
Permits for Kolmanskop Ghost Town are easily obtained at the gate or from tourism offices in Lüderitz. For deeper park excursions (like Bogenfels), you must book through a registered tour operator who handles the specialized security permits.
3. Is a 4×4 required?
For any excursion beyond Kolmanskop, a high-clearance 4×4 is non-negotiable. The tracks consist of deep, shifting sand and sharp schist rock that can easily claim standard tyres.
4. When is the best time to visit?
May to September offers the best weather. Summer (November to March) can be punishingly hot and is often plagued by fierce “south-wester” winds that sandblast everything in sight.
5. Are there any campsites inside the park?
There are no formal public campsites or lodges inside Tsau ǁKhaeb. Visitors usually base themselves in Lüderitz. Specialized multi-day 4×4 tours use mobile “fly-camps” where everything is carried in and out.
6. What is Bogenfels?
It is a massive natural rock arch on the coast. It is one of Namibia’s most famous landmarks but can only be visited on a guided day tour from Lüderitz due to its location in the restricted zone.
7. Can I see diamonds on the ground?
While the “moonlight” pickings of the 1900s are long gone, the area is still a high-security zone. Picking up any stones-diamond or otherwise-is strictly prohibited and can lead to severe legal consequences.
8. What wildlife lives in the Sperrgebiet?
It is the best place in Namibia to spot the elusive brown hyena. You may also see gemsbok, springbok, and the famous wild horses of the Namib near the park’s eastern fringe at Aus.
9. Is there mobile reception?
Only near Lüderitz and Kolmanskop. Once you move into the park’s interior or toward the coast, you are completely off the grid.
10. How long does a tour take?
Day tours to Bogenfels or Pomona typically last 7–8 hours. Multi-day “dune-crossing” expeditions from Lüderitz to Walvis Bay through the park can take 5 to 7 days.
