Launch review: New Mitsubishi Triton

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has unveiled the highly anticipated new Triton, marking a significant evolution in the bakkie segment. With a bold design overhaul, cutting-edge features, and tailored editions, this sixth-generation bakkie is poised to redefine Mitsubishi’s reputation in the South African market.

Bold and rugged

The new Triton adopts Mitsubishi’s so-called Beast Mode design philosophy, emphasising a muscular yet sophisticated presence. The front grille is more robust than ever, complemented by aggressive fenders and a three-dimensional bumper. LED daytime running lights with L-shaped elements round off the front end, while T-shaped rear taillights reinforce the Triton’s commanding road presence.

Comfortable and practical

The new Triton has a refined, spacious cabin designed with both driver comfort and passenger convenience in mind. High-quality materials, advanced noise reduction, and ergonomic seating make long journeys a breeze.

The horizontally themed dashboard is intuitive, with an 8-inch infotainment system offering smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 7-inch driver display provides essential vehicle information at a glance, ensuring ease of navigation whether you’re on city streets or rugged terrains.

Practical touches include spacious cupholders, a well-designed console box, and front seat adjustability. Double-cab models boast great shoulder and knee room, thanks to thoughtful design elements like sculpted front seatbacks.

Performance and off-road heritage

Mitsubishi’s reputation for off-road capability shines through in the Triton, backed by decades of Dakar Rally success. The Super Select 4WD-II system, equipped with Active Yaw Control, offers great traction and handling on any surface. This advanced system includes seven driving modes tailored for specific terrains, such as Mud, Sand, and Rock, ensuring the Triton is ready for every adventure.

The new 4N16 DI-DC turbodiesel engine, delivering 135kW and 430Nm of torque, promises powerful acceleration and efficiency. Paired with a six-speed automatic or manual transmission, this engine is very responsive and packs more than enough punch. For more budget-conscious buyers, the entry-level GL models feature a reliable 2.4-litre engine with a five-speed manual transmission.

The Triton’s new chassis and suspension enhance stability, durability, and comfort. High-tensile materials minimise vibrations, while redesigned front and rear suspension systems improve control on uneven surfaces.

First-class safety

Safety remains a cornerstone of the Triton. Standard across the range are Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and Hill Start Assist (HSA), ensuring confidence in challenging driving conditions. Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) construction enhances passive safety, while higher-spec models offer up to seven airbags for comprehensive occupant protection.

Tailored for South Africans

Mitsubishi has gone the extra mile by offering three special editions tailored for local tastes and catering to a diverse audience, from adventurers to lifestyle enthusiasts. The Triton Athlete is aimed at urban trendsetters, featuring stylish decals, a rubberised load bin, and 17-inch black alloy wheels. The Edition 46 is perfect for overlanders and boasts with rugged additions like a canopy, roof rack, and optional suspension upgrades. Finally, the Xtreme Edition should find favour with outdoor enthusiasts, combining bold styling with versatile performance.
