JMC returns to SA

Another new bakkie brand? Why not? Because clearly, we don’t have enough bakkies on our roads yet, another player is stepping into the ring… and this one’s backed by a global automotive giant with serious staying power. Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa, part of the international Salvador Caetano Group, has signed on as the official distributor for Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), bringing a range of practical, hard-working vehicles to our bakkie-loving nation.

JMC, a well-established Chinese manufacturer of commercial vehicles, is coming in strong with a no-nonsense lineup that includes the Vigus, the Grand Avenue and a series of Carry Plus workhorses for serious load-hauling.

Who’s behind all this?

While the JMC brand may still be unfamiliar to some, the Salvador Caetano Group certainly isn’t flying blind. Founded in 1946, this automotive heavyweight operates in over 40 countries across Europe, South America and Africa. With a track record in vehicle manufacturing, distribution, and mobility services – and a workforce of more than 7 000 people – they know what it takes to build a reliable automotive presence from the ground up.

Now, through Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa, they’re partnering with JMC to re-establish the brand locally, with parts availability, service support, and local dealership infrastructure all part of the deal. (Incidentally, Salvador Caetano Auto SA is also the local distributor of GAC.)

Let’s talk vehicles

Leading the charge is the JMC Vigus, making its return to South Africa. The current model will debut here before the end of this year, followed by the launch of a refreshed Vigus lineup in early 2026. Available in single- and double-cab variants, this bakkie is being pitched as a rugged all-rounder, equally at home on the job site or at the fishing dam.

The focus is on versatility, reliability, and real-world practicality; the kind of features South African bakkie buyers don’t just appreciate, they demand. From daily commutes to rough-and-ready off-road detours, the Vigus is engineered to keep moving, with the promise of local support and backup to match.

Then there’s the Grand Avenue, a spacious, confident SUV built to carry families, gear and groceries with equal ease. It’s designed with presence and practicality in mind, giving drivers a touch of executive comfort without ditching utility. Whether you’re heading to the Lowveld for a long weekend or tackling the school run in the suburbs, this one’s worth keeping an eye on.

What it all means

The relaunch of JMC in South Africa isn’t just another badge on a bonnet. With Salvador Caetano’s backing, the partnership promises a service-focused network, genuine parts availability, and vehicles built to work. And in a market where buyers still value dependability over digital flash, that could be just the edge JMC needs to carve out its place.

There is no further information on launch date, specs or pricing available just yet. However, if you think the JMC could well be the bakkie of your dreams, you can make enquiries at www.jmcsouthafrica.co.za.
