Is it a sedan? Or is it something a little more interesting? That was the question that kept coming back to me as I spent time with Volvo’s new ES90. On paper, it is positioned as a flagship electric sedan. But one look at its sleek silhouette, flowing roofline and purposeful stance suggests something more. There is a strong fastback influence here, both in design and in the way the car carries itself on the road.
And that, perhaps, is exactly the point. The ES90 is not trying to be just another sedan.
A flagship with purpose
The ES90 is Volvo’s latest fully electric flagship and a clear indication of where the brand is heading.
Built on Volvo’s dedicated SPA2 electric platform, which it shares with the EX90, the ES90 brings together everything the Swedish brand is known for. Think clean, understated Scandinavian design, a strong focus on safety and a driving experience that prioritises comfort over outright aggression.
It is also one of the most technologically advanced vehicles Volvo has produced to date, with a strong emphasis on software integration and over-the-air updates.
Durban to the Midlands
We flew in to Durban for the launch and after a brief introduction, pointed the ES90 towards the Midlands, a route that offers just about everything. From stop-start traffic to open stretches of road, it provided the perfect opportunity to explore the car’s character.
And within the first few kilometres, it reminded me exactly why I have always had a soft spot for Volvo. There is a calmness to the way it goes about its business. No drama, no fuss, just smooth, effortless progress.
Electric performance, done properly
The ES90 is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor producing 245kW and 480Nm of torque. As you would expect from an electric vehicle, power delivery is immediate and linear.
The sprint from 0 to 100km/h takes a claimed 6.6 seconds, which is more than adequate for a vehicle of this nature. It is not trying to be a performance sedan, but it has more than enough punch when you need it.
Top speed is limited to 180km/h, in line with Volvo’s long-standing focus on safety.
Out on the open road, the ES90 feels composed and refined. Acceleration is effortless, and overtaking requires little more than a flex of your right foot.
Range and charging
One of the standout figures is the claimed range. Volvo quotes up to 755km on the WLTP cycle, which places the ES90 firmly among the leaders in its segment.
Power comes from a 92kWh battery, supported by an 800-volt electrical system that allows for faster charging and improved efficiency.
On a compatible DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in around 25 minutes. In real-world terms, this makes long-distance travel far more practical than many might expect.
Built for real-world conditions
Volvo has also paid attention to how the ES90 will perform in everyday South African conditions.
The battery features advanced thermal management, ensuring consistent performance in both hot and cold environments. Given our climate, that is not just a nice-to-have feature, it is essential.
The suspension setup has also been tuned for a variety of road surfaces. Adaptive air suspension is available on higher-spec models, allowing the car to adjust ride height and damping to suit the conditions.
On the road, this translates into a ride that feels settled and comfortable, even on less-than-perfect surfaces.
Space and practicality
As a flagship model, the ES90 does not disappoint when it comes to space.
With a wheelbase of 3 102mm, there is plenty of room for passengers, while the boot offers 446 litres of luggage capacity. Fold the rear seats down and that expands to 1 427 litres.
There is also a 27-litre front boot, or “frunk”, which is ideal for storing charging cables and smaller items.
A calm, modern interior
Step inside and you are greeted by a cabin that feels more like a lounge than a traditional car interior.
The design is clean and uncluttered, with a strong focus on usability. Materials are of a high standard, and everything feels well put together.
The quietness of the cabin stands out. With no engine noise and excellent insulation, it creates a calm, Scandinavian-inspired space that suits long-distance travel perfectly.
Higher-spec models add features such as an electrochromatic panoramic roof, which allows you to adjust the amount of light entering the cabin, and a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
Safety remains central
This is a Volvo, after all, so safety remains a key focus. The ES90 comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping aid, blind spot monitoring and collision mitigation systems.
Higher-spec models add features such as Pilot Assist with steering support and a 360-degree camera system.
In addition, the ES90 is fitted with nine airbags and Volvo’s well-known structural safety systems designed to protect occupants in the event of a collision.
Trim levels and pricing
The ES90 will be available locally in three trim levels, namely Core, Plus and Ultra.
Even the entry-level Core model is well specified, with features such as four-zone climate control, a panoramic roof, heated seats and a head-up display.
The Plus adds additional comfort and customisation options, while the Ultra brings the full luxury experience with features such as soft-close doors, massage seats and enhanced rear passenger comfort.
Pricing starts at R1 590 000, which includes a five-year/100 000km maintenance and warranty plan, as well as an eight-year battery warranty.
Final thoughts
Call it a sedan, call it a fastback, or call it something in between. What matters is how it delivers on the road.
The Volvo ES90 is refined, comfortable and quietly capable, with that unmistakable Scandinavian sense of calm that makes long journeys feel effortless.
And perhaps that is exactly what sets it apart. It is not trying to fit into a category. It is simply doing its own thing and doing it very well.
