There’s a very good reason that the Toyota Hilux is consistently a top seller in the South African market. It’s capable, reliable and darn good-looking too! Toyota has now taken everything that’s good about the Hilux and taken it to the next level with the introduction of the new Hilux Raider X Limited Edition.
The two new Limited Edition models are based on the Raider 2.4 4×4 variants in standard guise and will only be available for a ‘limited’ period only. Badged as the 2.4 GD-6 Raider X 4×4 six-speed manual and 2.4 GD-6 Raider X 4×4 six-speed auto respectively, the newcomers are easily distinguished thanks to the special exterior package.
The Hilux Raider X has – among other things – new 17-inch, bi-tone, diamond-polished, chrome and black multi-spoke alloy wheels; matt black overfenders with red insert detailing; a chrome grille inset bar with Hilux badging; a styling bar; an integrated tonneau cover and unique Raider X badging.
The Raider X is more than a pretty face, though. It also boasts a fully rubberised cargo bed and spring-loaded tailgate assist for those times you need more of a workhorse.
Under the bonnet of the Hilux Raider X is Toyota’s proven 2.4-litre diesel powerplant employing DOHC 16-valve, inline 4-cylinder architecture and delivering 110kW and 400Nm of torque available from 1 600rpm. Making it even more appealing is a claimed fuel consumption of 7.6 litres/100km/h (manual) and 7.7 litres/100km (auto) in a combined driving cycle.
The cabin is equally special, and its long list of comfort and convenience features means you get a whole lot of bang for your buck. These include cruise control; a multi-info display inset within the instrument cluster, a large-screen display for the audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth functionality, satellite controls on the steering wheel, and a reverse camera.
To keep you safe in the new Hilux Raider X there’s an exhaustive array of active and passive systems. Must-haves such as ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Hill Assist Control and Trailer Sway Control are all standard. The package also includes a full suite of airbags, ISOFIX child-seat attachment points, front and rear park distance control (PDC).
Remarkably, all this extra kit comes at a very small price premium, with the manual model costing R674 800 and the automatic R704 300. Both models are covered by a 3-year/100 000km warranty and a 9-services/90 000km service plan. Service intervals are set at 10 000 km and customers can purchase a variety of service plan and warranty extensions from their nearest Toyota dealer.
