Third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan launched

With over 41 000 units of the Tiguan SUV sold in South Africa since it was first introduced here in 2009, the third generation of this Volkswagen favourite has now been introduced.

Power and performance

Initially the new Tiguan will be offered with Volkswagen’s the 1.4 TSI 110kW engine mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission. This powerplant develops maximum torque of 250Nm available between 1 500rpm and 3 500rpm. Sprint time from standstill to 100km/h is 9.2 seconds and the top speed is 207 km/h.

The Tiguan 2.0 TDI 110kW DSG and 2.0 TSI 140kW DSG will be available for sale in November 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, respectively.

Updated design and improved aerodynamics

The design of the latest iteration of the Tiguan bears a strong VW family resemblance, but at the same time it is all new. A distinctive feature is the higher, more powerful-looking front end with integrated LED headlights. In-between, a glass-covered horizontal bar with an integrated LED strip replaces the traditional radiator grille.

New cockpit and infotainment system

Volkswagen has also completely redesigned the interior of the third-generation Tiguan, and it is now all about high-quality materials the likes of which one doesn’t often find in this class of vehicle. In addition, the components of the latest modular infotainment matrix (MIB4) are merged on board to create a clearly designed and closely integrated cockpit landscape that is intuitive to operate.

The modules include the new Digital Cockpit (digital instruments with anti-reflective coating in tablet landscape format), a large infotainment screen with a completely new menu structure and graphics (standard display 12.9-inches, optionally 15-inches), a new optional head-up display and a new multifunction driving gear shift with an integrated OLED display.

Comfort and convenience

The new ergoActive Plus leather seats with pneumatic four-way lumbar adjustment and a pneumatic 10-chamber pressure massage function are a perfect match for the high-quality character of this SUV. These leather seats are optional on the Life derivative but come standard on the R-Line derivative.

While the third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan has increased in length by approximately three centimetres, its height, width and wheelbase remain practically identical to that of its predecessor. However, the luggage compartment capacity of the new generation shows just how good the use of space is – its luggage compartment capacity has increased by 37 litres to 652 litres (when loaded up to height of the rear seat backrests).

Driver assistance systems

The new Tiguan comes standard with Park Assist Plus, which allows assisted driving into or out of parallel or bay parking. The vehicle takes control of acceleration, braking and steering for this purpose.

Other driver assist systems include Trailer Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Hill Start Assist, Park Distance Control front and rear, Electronic Stability Control with Electromechenical brake booster, Travel Assist, Lane Assist and Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert and an exit warning system.
