Recently, we had the chance to put the Discovery 350D through its paces on a scenic meander from Pretoria to Hoedspruit, and let’s just say this luxury SUV didn’t just meet expectations – it redefined them.
Looks that impress without trying too hard
From the first glance, it’s clear that the latest-generation Discovery has evolved. Gone is the boxy, rugged silhouette of old. In its place: a sleeker, more sculpted design that retains Land Rover’s signature cues while embracing modern sophistication. Flush door handles, the iconic stepped roofline, squared-off taillights, and a bold grille with LED headlamps announce its presence without screaming for attention. It’s the kind of vehicle that fits in equally well at a five-star lodge or a muddy mountain pass – and yes, we checked.
Performance with polish
Under the bonnet lurks a 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel delivering 257kW and a colossal 700Nm of torque. This powerplant is matched with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and Land Rover’s intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. The result? Seamless acceleration, confident overtaking, and – surprisingly – a 0-100km/h sprint in just 6.3 seconds. For a seven-seater SUV weighing north of two tonnes, that’s impressive.
Yet the real magic lies in how composed it feels. Whether gliding along a national highway or threading its way up the sweeping mountain passes around Lydenburg and Dullstroom, the Discovery remains poised. Adaptive Dynamics and electronic air suspension flatten bumps and smooth out uneven surfaces, while off-road, the Terrain Response system and 285mm of ground clearance mean you can leave the tar behind without a second thought. Wade Sensing? Check. Hill Descent Control? Naturally. Gravel tracks? Barely noticed.
Cabin comfort that pampers
Inside, the Discovery 350D wraps you in understated luxury. Our test vehicle came kitted with 20-way adjustable, heated and cooled front seats (with massage function nogal), four-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof that brought the Lowveld sunshine inside. The 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment system was snappy and intuitive, supported by wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a booming Meridian sound system that made every playlist sound like a private concert.
The third row isn’t just an afterthought either – it offers genuine space for adults, with USB ports and cup holders to keep peace in the rearguard. With all seven seats in play, boot space still clocks in at a respectable 258 litres. Fold the third row and you get 922 litres; flatten the lot and you’re staring at 2 391 litres. Yes, that’s enough for a week’s worth of bags, camera gear, a cooler box, and the obligatory stash of farm stall treats.
Safety and tech features that work with you
It’s not just about luxury and off-road prowess – the Discovery also takes safety seriously. Standard features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and a crisp 3D surround camera system that turns parking in tight spots from a stress fest into a smug grin. You also get driver condition monitoring, emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and a clever ClearSight Ground View system that gives you a virtual view of the terrain beneath the bonnet – especially handy when you’re creeping over a rocky outcrop or negotiating a steep decline.
Route tested: Pretoria to Hoedspruit
The route offered an ideal test bed: high-speed highways, the rolling hills of Mpumalanga, charming dorpies like Dullstroom and Ohrigstad, and finally, some decent gravel outside Hoedspruit. We even managed a brief off-road jaunt on the way to our overnight spot. And through it all, the Discovery remained unflappable – composed on the tar, confident on the gravel, and always exceptionally comfortable.
Practicality meets pedigree
The Discovery 350D isn’t just a pretty face with plush seats – it’s built to work hard too. A towing capacity of 3 500kg means it can haul everything from trailers and boats to off-road caravans, while the configurable cabin makes it a flexible companion for family holidays, weekend escapes, or overland adventures. The mix of heritage and modern tech gives it a quiet confidence – it doesn’t need to shout. It simply delivers.
Final thoughts
After more than 1 200km on all manner of roads, one thing became clear: the Land Rover Discovery 350D is made for South African adventures. It’s as comfortable cruising to the bush as it is exploring mountain passes or navigating city traffic. If you’re after a vehicle that can do it all – with a dollop of British charm and loads of practicality – then the Discovery should be high on your shortlist.
