The Toyota Hilux has long been the bakkie of choice for adventurers across Africa, and now, a sneak peek at the next generation has leaked, revealing some exciting upgrades. Leaked images from an international source suggest that the 2026 Hilux is getting a major tech injection, with a focus on a more modern and practical interior layout.

The most significant change is the addition of not one, but two 12.3-inch screens. One will serve as the driver’s instrument display, while the other handles the infotainment, bringing a much-needed contemporary feel to the cabin. This is a massive step up from the current 8.0-inch screen and is rumoured to run the same software as the latest Land Cruiser Prado.

The dashboard design itself takes cues from the rugged Prado, suggesting a more refined and robust feel. While the Hilux is expected to retain its current platform and much of its structure, it’s getting a serious facelift. Look out for sharper headlights, a new grille, updated bumpers, refreshed wheel arches, and new wheels to keep it looking fresh.
Under the bonnet, the trusty 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine is set to remain, with some tweaks to improve emissions and performance—because who doesn’t love a bit more power for those long road trips? It is also likely to get electric power steering, which will support newer driver-assist features.
But the real buzz is the speculation around a potential plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant. This could use a 2.5-litre petrol-electric setup, similar to the RAV4 PHEV, offering a more efficient option alongside the standard diesel and mild-hybrid models.
Toyota is expected to reveal the new Hilux later this year, with the bakkie likely to land in showrooms in 2026. This next-gen Hilux looks set to continue its legendary status, but with a welcome dose of modern tech and a more refined design, ready for any adventure.
