Italian passion meets electric power
If you’ve been an Alfa fan for any length of time, you’ll know that words like “electric” and “battery-powered” have traditionally had no place in an Alfista’s vocabulary. After all, this is a brand built on petrol-fuelled passion – cars that make you feel something every time you turn the key (or, more recently, push the button). But times change, and so does Alfa Romeo. The brand’s latest arrival, the new Alfa Romeo Junior, is not just another compact SUV – it’s the start of a new chapter in the brand’s electrified story.
At the recent South African launch, we had the chance to spend around 100km behind the wheel of both the Elettrica and Elettrica Veloce models. Granted, it wasn’t the sort of extended road trip we usually relish, but it was enough to form a strong first impression – and, truth be told, we walked away more than a little impressed.
Designed to ignite Italian passion
Alfa Romeo describes the Junior as a compact urban vehicle designed to ignite that typically Italian passion for life – and it does just that from the moment you lay eyes on it. Measuring just under 4.2 metres, it’s smaller than it looks in photos, yet its stance is pure Alfa: bold, athletic, and beautifully sculpted. The iconic scudetto grille takes pride of place up front, framed by the signature trilobo design, while the sleek coda tronca rear adds aerodynamic flair. There’s even a laser-etched biscione emblem on the C-pillar – a neat nod to Alfa’s heritage that connects past and future in a single stroke.
The Junior has been a hot topic overseas, with over 22 000 orders already placed and a battery electric vehicle share of 21%. Clearly, even the die-hard petrolheads are coming around to the idea of an electric Alfa. And after our short drive, it’s not hard to see why.
Two versions, same spirit
The range for South Africa includes two fully electric variants: the Elettrica and the Elettrica Veloce. Both are front-wheel drive, with electric motors tuned for that signature Alfa agility. The Elettrica produces 118kW and 260Nm, sprinting from 0–100km/h in 9 seconds and topping out at 152km/h. The Elettrica Veloce, meanwhile, dials things up considerably with 207kW and 345Nm, cutting the 0–100km/h run to just 5.9 seconds and stretching to 200km/h flat out.
Even with the instant torque and near-silent power delivery, the Junior still feels unmistakably Alfa. The steering is precise and communicative, and the chassis – tuned using expertise drawn from the Giulia GTA programme – strikes that sweet balance between agility and comfort. On our drive, it was as happy weaving around potholes as it was carving along open stretches of tar, delivering that driver-focused experience the brand is known for.
A cabin that blends modernity and tradition
Step inside, and the Junior wraps you in an atmosphere that’s both modern and timeless. The interior has a distinctly Italian flair, combining clean design with tactile materials and clever detailing. The driver-focused cockpit puts everything where it should be, with a crisp 10.25-inch digital cluster and matching touchscreen infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, making connectivity effortless.
Safety and tech to match the looks
Both versions feature Alfa’s most advanced driver-assistance technologies to date, including Level 2 ADAS with lane centring, adaptive cruise control with stop/go, LED matrix headlights, emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition, and blind spot detection. The brand has managed to integrate all this tech without diluting the driving experience – something not all electric cars can claim.
A brave new world for Alfa
Make no mistake: the Junior represents more than just a new model. It’s Alfa Romeo’s statement of intent. With global markets like Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Australia already embracing it, South Africa is now officially part of the brand’s electric evolution.
Yes, it’s strange at first to drive an Alfa that doesn’t purr, growl or snarl – but somehow, the soul of the brand is still there. The Junior is alive with that same spirited energy, that sense of occasion that makes even a trip to the shops feel like something special.
As we parked up after our brief 100km drive, I found myself quietly smiling. Maybe the world isn’t ending after all. Maybe Alfa has just found a new way to make our hearts race – only this time, it’s powered by electrons instead of octane.
