If your overlanding rig has been parked in the garage longer than usual due to the eye-watering cost of filling up, we have some fantastic news that will have you digging out the recovery tracks and checking your tyre pressures.
Data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) indicates that South African overlanders are about to receive significant financial relief at the pumps this June. Following months of severe volatility that saw diesel prices soar, international petroleum product prices have collapsed.
For those of us running long-range diesel tanks, the projected basic fuel recoveries are looking astronomical. The current data points towards a substantial basic drop of up to R4.90 per litre for 0.05% diesel and R4.11 per litre for the cleaner 0.005% sulphur grade.
The Tax Catch
Before you start planning a trans-continental trek solely on these massive figures, there is a small caveat to keep in mind. The temporary fuel levy relief introduced by the National Treasury earlier this year is starting to wind down. In June, the government will add back 50% of this tax holiday.
This means the active diesel levy will increase by R1.97 per litre on Wednesday, 3 June 2026. However, because the drop in international diesel prices has been so drastic, it completely absorbs this tax hike. You will still walk away with a major multi-rand reduction per litre at the filling station, making long-distance touring significantly more affordable next month.
On the flip side, if your touring rig or secondary runabout runs on petrol, the outlook is flat. High international petrol refining margins have completely wiped out any gains from a stronger Rand, meaning petrol drivers face a minor increase of around 5.5 cents per litre for 95 Petrol.
Why the Drop Matters for Your Next Adventure
When you are pushing a heavy, kitted-out 4×4 through the sand or cruising down the highway with a rooftop tent catching the wind, fuel economy is always top of mind. Filling up twin long-range tanks can easily dent the travel budget.
This June drop provides the perfect window to top up your tanks, head out into the bush, and support local community campsites across South Africa. Whether you are aiming for the rugged tracks of the Northern Cape, a winter getaway in the Kruger, or exploring the mountain passes of the Drakensberg, your journey is about to get a whole lot cheaper.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) will announce the final adjusted pump prices just before they take effect on the first Wednesday of June. Keep your eyes on the pumps, get your route maps ready, and let’s get back out there.
