South Africa is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, and we are privileged to have excellent campsites in all nine provinces, surrounded by exquisite nature scenes and wildlife. In the next few months, Rikus Truter from Lekker Kampplekke will discuss his top five campsites in each province. First up is Gauteng.

1. Ruah Park

This campsite is a newly developed reserve in the beautiful green valley of the Bobbejaansberge, only 30 km north-east of Pretoria. This piece of bushveld boasts 38 exclusive campsites with all the amenities for the discerning camper. Each stand has private ablution and washing-up facilities, electricity, running water (a tap) and a braai area. There is also a three-bedroom self-catering house available for the person who enjoys the outdoors but do not want to camp. A natural fountain flows through the park and creates a paradise for the antelope that move around freely. The birdlife in this area is also worth a mention, and for the more energetic campers, there are hiking trails around the dam. Be sure to pack your fishing gear for the bream in the dam.

2. Dinokeng Resort

The Dinokeng Resort – only 50 minutes from Pretoria and 90 minutes from Johannesburg – offers the ideal getaway for young and old. Guests have a choice to camp with private or communal ablution facilities or to stay in one of the self-catering units. The resort offers a selection of water slides, swimming pools and large play areas where the little ones can play while everyone enjoy the relaxing bushveld atmosphere. Additionally, there is a river and a dam for campers who wants to try their hand at some fishing.

3. Sionbergh Camping Site

This is a beautiful campsite located close to the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, on a farm just outside Heidelberg. The quiet atmosphere makes it the ideal getaway for campers and families looking for a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of city life. The campsite boasts lush green lawns, and each stand is equipped with electricity and has a beautiful view of the dam. The modern ablution facilities and scullery area are serviced daily. Besides the large saltwater pool, there are many activities to keep the little ones entertained, including a well-equipped play park and an obstacle course. Campers can also go hiking, fishing and mountain biking. There is a farm shop on site for all necessities.

4. Bass Lake Lodge

The scenery of Bass Lake Lodge, coupled with the excellent facilities and the services that go along with it, make this one of the top South African camping experiences. Established in 2011 by experienced campers Leon and Meléne van den Heever, this caravan park was is located in the picturesque Bobbejaansberg, about 30 minutes north-east of Pretoria. With a view of a beautiful dam, the caravan park gives you the ideal getaway to reconnect with nature and slow down. The tranquil atmosphere attracts visitors to the many outdoor activities available such as a nature walk on the various hiking trails, fishing, or simply relaxing next to the campfire. The dams, which are open for fishing, is filled with barbels and bream.

5. Koedoesrus Bushcamp

Koedoesrus is situated in the Big Five Dinokeng Nature Reserve and offers five campsites with braai facilities, all located near the splash pool and communal entertainment area featuring a boma. This camping site is ideal for group bookings, and all sites have electricity and ample shade. Koedoesrus is an ideal weekend getaway for city slickers, offering visitors a tranquil surrounding to relax and recharge.
