Chery Global Innovation Conference: Omoda and Jaecoo show off

These days, Chinese vehicles are a dime a dozen in the motoring world. In fact, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with all the new brands and models that are now available for sale in South Africa. During a recent visit to the Chery Global Innovation Conference in China, as guests of Omoda and Jaecoo, we got up close and personal with a handful of new vehicles that will probably be launched here before long.

From the Omoda stable, it was especially the C5, the C7 and the E5 – this manufacturer’s first fully electric vehicle – that stood out. From Jaecoo’s side, it was the J5, J6, J7, J8 and the plug-in electric J7 PHEV that caught our attention. The big news, however, was the global launch of the J5, which will probably be available here in the course of 2025.

More about the J5

There is no specific information yet on exactly when the J5 will be launched in South Africa. What we do know is that it will compete in the compact SUV market segment and offer a smart combination of technology, comfort and versatility. In short, Jaecoo believes it’s the perfect ride for city dwellers who like to venture out into nature every once in a while.

As such, the J5 boasts a towing capacity of 1 250kg (braked) and is equipped with a roof rack that can carry 75kg. It also boasts multi-purpose built-in camping lights to make your weekend getaway in the woods as comfortable as possible. It also offers an intelligent ride system with six modes: Mud, Off-Road, Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow

Although the SA model range and specification levels are yet to be announced, the J5 is likely to boast a 13.2-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, satellite navigation and connectivity applications – which include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There will also be a giant sunroof, a Sony sound system with eight speakers and smart interior lighting.

An interesting aspect of the J5 is the fact that the seats are specially designed to accommodate pets. Furthermore, it also offers a step so that pets can get in and out easily and there is even a place where you can give your pet food and water. So your furry friend can go wherever you go … in style!

Something else to look forward to

In Wuhu, the home of Omoda and Jaecoo in China, we were fortunate enough to experience the J6. There are whispers that it will be launched in South Africa sometime during 2025 and in it should make the more established players in that market segment sit up and take notice. It will also make us look at Jaecoo with completely new eyes.

We had the opportunity to put the J6 through its paces on a short 4×4 track. There had been a heavy thunderstorm shortly before and the course was a proper mud bath. The fact that the model at our disposal was purely electric was a little concerning, but the J6 outperformed our wildest dreams! After the short test drive, the vehicle was covered in mud from its wheels to its roof and there were huge smiles all around.

There is still no certainty about the exact engine options that will be available here and at this stage there is only an electric model, but if there is one thing we already know about the Chinese it is that they work quickly and efficiently. So, don’t be surprised if there’s a petrol engine or two in the mix when it’s launched. All we can say with relative certainty is that the Jaecoo J6’s chunky boxy design and off-road capabilities will make it a hit.
