Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has broadened the appeal of its iconic Land Cruiser 70 Series by introducing a manual transmission option for its 2.8 GD engine. This powertrain, already a hit in the automatic variant, is now available in both Station Wagon and Single Cab configurations. Pricing starts at R887 000 for the Single Cab and R969 800 for the Station Wagon.
Versatility meets durability
The addition of the manual gearbox follows Toyota’s early 2024 upgrade to the 70 Series, which saw the introduction of the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual option caters to customers who prefer greater control over gear shifts, a popular choice among enthusiasts and off-road purists.
The new manual transmission has been specifically engineered to enhance the 2.8 GD engine’s capabilities. Producing a robust 150kW of power between 3 200 to 3 400rpm and 450Nm of torque from 2 400 to 3 000rpm, the manual gearbox maximises performance and efficiency.
A modern take on a classic design
Toyota discontinued the LC 76 (Station Wagon) 4.5 V8 Diesel manual transmission earlier this year, making this manual addition a timely replacement. The upgraded gearbox features shorter first, second, and third gears for improved start-off performance, while a longer fifth gear enhances fuel economy and reduces engine noise on highways. This refined design ensures that the manual gearbox takes full advantage of the four-cylinder engine’s higher torque output.
To support the powertrain’s durability, Toyota has incorporated a new flywheel compatible with a 12-inch clutch, offering superior clutch slip resistance. A triple synchronisation mechanism for the first gear has also been introduced to improve shifting performance. Furthermore, the manual variants benefit from a dust seal at the rear end plate, preventing foreign matter from interfering with the release bearing – a vital feature for rugged terrains.
Shared strengths across variants
In terms of capability, the manual transmission models retain the same gross combination mass (GCM) and towing capacity as their automatic counterparts. They also feature the same level of equipment, with the exception of the front console box and downhill assist control, which were adjusted to accommodate the manual gear shifter.
Proven off-road legacy
The Land Cruiser 70 Series is celebrated for its unmatched off-road capabilities, strength, and reliability. The introduction of the manual gearbox is set to further solidify its standing among adventurers and professional users alike. Whether navigating rugged trails or handling demanding work environments, the 70 Series continues to deliver exceptional performance.
Ownership peace of mind
As with all Land Cruiser 70 Series models, the new manual derivatives come standard with a three-year/100 000km warranty. Customers can also opt for a 100 000km service plan, ensuring peace of mind during ownership.
