Haval H7: A New Benchmark for Versatile SUVs

Haval, the standout subsidiary of GWM, continues to strengthen its foothold in the South African market with an expanding lineup that caters to evolving consumer preferences. Following the success of models like the Jolion and H6, the H7 has entered the scene, offering a compelling mix of refinement, versatility, and capability. This addition to Haval’s portfolio reflects the brand’s commitment to meeting the growing demand in the B- and C-SUV segments, which have seen significant growth in recent years.

Globally, Haval’s rapid rise has positioned GWM as one of the most influential Chinese automakers, contributing to China’s status as the world’s largest vehicle exporter, surpassing traditional automotive powerhouses like Japan and Germany. In South Africa, Haval’s consistent inclusion in the Top 10 monthly sales charts highlights its resonance with local consumers.

The H7, a larger and more feature-rich sibling to the H6, is designed to cater to buyers seeking an SUV that balances practicality, performance, and sophistication. With its robust build quality, improved engine refinement, and competitive pricing, it promises to appeal to families, adventurers, and commuters alike. Offering multiple drivetrain configurations, advanced features, and a generous warranty, the H7 aims to position itself as a leader in its segment.

But how does it perform on South African roads? During the recent launch event, we took the H7 for a test drive across highways, urban routes, and gravel tracks to find out if it lives up to its promise. Here’s what we discovered.

Driving impression

We tested the Haval H7 extensively on a variety of routes, including highways, city streets, back roads, and gravel tracks, we even did a bit of water crossing on a short detour we took. The 4WD variant proved to be a refined and capable road trip companion, impressing with its excellent ride quality and minimal cabin noise on open roads.

However, while the engine and gearbox calibration has seen improvements, a noticeable lag remains, particularly at low speeds, where the gearbox struggles to decide on the right gear. This can detract from an otherwise enjoyable drive. That said, the H7 shone on gravel roads, handling bumpy and corrugated surfaces with confidence thanks to its well-tuned suspension and solid build quality.

Fuel efficiency is an area where the H7 still faces challenges. The 4WD variant recorded a combined consumption of 11.3 litres/100km, higher than the claimed 9.1 litres/100km. However, the upcoming hybrid version is expected to offer significant improvements in efficiency. In urban settings, we drove the 2.0T Luxury DCT variant, which performed admirably and raised the question of whether all-wheel drive is truly necessary for most buyers. The entry-level variant is more than adequate for day-to-day driving, with the additional features in the Super Luxury trim providing extra appeal for those seeking a touch of luxury.

The 2.0T engine delivered strong performance across different driving modes. In Eco mode, it remained smooth and efficient, while Sport mode unleashed its responsiveness, making overtaking effortless. The transmission performed well, with quick and smooth downshifts when required. Notably, the engine refinement is a highlight, with far less mechanical noise than earlier Haval turbopetrol engines, even under load, showcasing significant progress in this area.

On gravel roads, the H7’s strengths truly came to the fore. The suspension absorbed uneven terrain effortlessly, while the robust construction ensured a secure and comfortable ride. Sharing its monocoque platform with the H6, the H7 strikes a balance between a sporty suspension tune and overall comfort, handling Gauteng’s uneven road surfaces with ease. While the ride is slightly firm, it remains comfortable enough for daily commutes and longer journeys.

Overall, the Haval H7 demonstrates commendable versatility, refinement, and build quality, making it a strong contender in its segment. Its performance, both on and off-road, positions it as an excellent option for buyers seeking a reliable and capable SUV. Despite a few areas for improvement, such as fuel efficiency and gearbox calibration, the H7 offers great value and stands out as a well-rounded offering for the South African market.

Drivetrains

The Haval H7 offers two distinct powertrain options, catering to a variety of driving needs. The first is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers an impressive 170kW and 380Nm, a significant improvement over the 150kW and 320Nm of the H6. This engine is paired with a nine-speed wet dual-clutch transmission and is available in both two-wheel drive (2WD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) configurations, depending on the variant.

The second option is the upcoming hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) model, which features Haval’s innovative turbocharged hybrid drivetrain. This system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a Dual Hybrid Transmission (DHT) to deliver a combined output of 179kW and 530Nm.

Designed for maximum efficiency, the HEV model is exclusively available in a 2WD configuration and is expected to be the most fuel-efficient option in the line-up, appealing to eco-conscious drivers who do not require off-road capability.

With these options, the Haval H7 caters to a diverse audience, offering both powerful performance and innovative hybrid technology for a range of driving preferences.

Off-road capability

For those who venture off the beaten path, the H7’s 4WD variant is equipped with a Haldex-style BorgWarner four-wheel drive system and an All-Terrain Mode with dedicated settings for Grass, Gravel, Sand, Snow, and standard road conditions. It also boasts advanced features like an electronic rear differential lock and off-road cruise control, ensuring superior traction and control in challenging environments.

The H7’s off-road credentials are further bolstered by its ground clearance of 210mm and impressive approach, departure, and breakover angles of 24, 30, and 19 degrees, respectively. These specifications position the H7 as a highly capable off-roader, even outperforming competitors like the Subaru Forester in some areas.

Safety and driver assistance

Haval has ensured the H7 offers top-notch safety features across the range. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). A 360-degree camera is standard, with the 4WD model offering an upgraded 540-degree camera for enhanced visibility in off-road scenarios. Adaptive Intelligent Cruise Control is also included, making long-distance drives safer and more comfortable.

With its combination of powerful drivetrains, advanced off-road capabilities, and comprehensive safety features, the Haval H7 stands out as a versatile and capable SUV designed for both urban commuting and adventurous exploration.

The verdict

The Haval H7 presents itself as a well-rounded SUV that blends versatility, performance, and practicality. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine offers strong acceleration, while the spacious cabin and smooth driving experience make it an excellent daily driver. Although fuel consumption was slightly disappointing, the hybrid model promises improved efficiency for eco-conscious buyers.

The 4WD variant, with its rear differential lock, advanced All-Terrain Mode, and solid off-road angles, suggests great potential for rugged exploration. Its 210mm ground clearance is sufficient for most overlanding routes, and with the addition of slightly larger tires, it could tackle trails even more confidently.

As an overlanding vehicle, the H7 seems well-suited for destinations like Botswana’s pans or South Africa’s gravel routes. It also excels in towing capacity, with the 4WD model handling up to 2 000kg. Whether for daily commutes or outdoor adventures, the H7 offers a compelling mix of features that make it a worthy contender in its segment.
