If you like adventure of the two-wheeled kind, BMW Motorrad’s latest creation will make your throttle hand itch. The all-new BMW F 450 GS has been designed for riders who crave agility, versatility, and that unmistakable GS DNA, but in a lighter, more approachable package.

First revealed at the 2024 EICMA motorcycle show, this new mid-size adventurer represents the next step in BMW’s legendary GS family. It’s been built from the ground up to deliver a mix of everyday usability, long-distance comfort, sporty performance, and genuine off-road prowess – all in a bike that’s easier to handle and more forgiving for riders of all experience levels.
Powering the F 450 GS is a completely new 420cc twin-cylinder engine producing 35kW at 8 750r/min and 43Nm at 6 750r/min. BMW’s engineers have gone all out to make this engine both smooth and lively, using a 135-degree crankpin offset and a balance shaft to keep vibrations to a minimum. Lightweight, frugal, and compact, the motor only sips about 3.8 litres/100km, giving a range of over 350km from the 14-litre fuel tank.
The chassis has been designed for precision and playfulness, with a tubular steel frame, KYB suspension, and a short wheelbase that makes the bike feel nimble whether carving through mountain passes or tackling a gravel track. Braking duties are handled by a Brembo system up front and ByBre at the rear, both backed up by BMW Motorrad ABS Pro for confident stopping – even when leaning into corners.

Perhaps the most innovative feature is BMW’s new Easy Ride Clutch (ERC). It’s a clever system that removes the need to manually use the clutch lever during most riding situations. From pulling away to shifting gears or managing slow-speed manoeuvres, it handles the process automatically. For newer riders or anyone who loves technical off-road trails, it’s a revelation – but the manual lever remains, so you can still take full control when you want to.
As you’d expect from BMW, the tech list is impressive. Riding modes include Rain, Road, and Enduro as standard, with Enduro Pro added on the higher-spec variants for serious dirt adventures. Systems like Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), and engine drag torque control (MSR) add layers of safety and finesse, keeping the rider in command in every condition.
Ergonomics have been fine-tuned for both comfort and control. The high aluminium handlebar, adjustable levers, and a choice of three seat heights make it easy to find a perfect fit, whether you’re commuting or crossing continents. Even the foot controls can be adjusted to suit your riding boots – a small but thoughtful touch.

The bike also features a sharp 6.5-inch TFT display, offering smartphone connectivity for navigation, music, and calls. Add a USB-C socket, full LED lighting, and that signature GS “X” daytime running light, and you have a package that feels every bit as premium as BMW’s larger adventure machines.
Visually, the F 450 GS carries the unmistakable GS attitude: bold, athletic lines, a sculpted tank, and rugged detailing. Four trim levels will be offered globally – Basic, Exclusive, Sport, and GS Trophy – each with unique styling and features. The Trophy variant, inspired by BMW’s GS Trophy events, stands out with off-road suspension, white handguards, a rally windscreen, and the ERC system as standard.
Of course, BMW Motorrad’s accessories catalogue offers plenty of ways to make it your own. Riders can opt for an Akrapovic exhaust, cross-spoke wheels, or various luggage systems, windshields, and seats – all crafted to match the bike’s dual-purpose personality.

Compact it may be, but the new F 450 GS is no lightweight pretender. With 35kW on tap and a wet weight of just 178kg, it’s quick, manageable, and fun – perfect for those who want to take the scenic route, on or off the tar. South African riders, however, will need to be patient. The BMW F 450 GS is expected to arrive locally only in the second quarter of 2026.
