We recently brought you some news regarding the possibility of a meaner, more powerful GR Hilux. Reports suggest that the next GR Hilux could make use of the new LC300 motor. Now if Toyota were smart they would also drop that engine into a Fortuner. As it turns out, they are smart and reports from Australia suggest that we could see a 700Nm Fortuner. Here are the details.
According to Japanese site Creative 311, which was quoting dealer sources – the incoming LC300 will be packing a new 3.3-litre diesel V6 engine that produces 230kW and 687Nm, it will also be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Now imagine that combination in a GR tuned Fortuner.
While nothing is confirmed as of you, sources close CarsGuide said that the new engine would have multiple uses within the Toyota family. If Toyota had to fit that new motor into the Hilux for example it would be the most powerful diesel production bakkie to ever set a wheel on South African soil.
Are these GR Toyota models just pipe dreams? Well, no, not really. After the massive success of the GR Yaris recently reports suggest that Toyota is confident that other GR specific vehicles will be met with the same appeal.
The Toyota Hilux and Fortuner are two of the most popular vehicles on sale in South Africa and have been for a good number of years. With competition heating up in the segment, a Ford and Volkswagen collaboration and the demand for faster, better bakkies we might just see a GR branded off-road powerhouse from the mighty Japanese brand in the next few years.
